Summary

Sous le second empire, le bouleversement de Paris voit le quartier marchand se transformer avec l'apparition du projet Baltard. C'est pendant l'édification des fameux pavillons que Zola situe son récit. La pratique ancienne, artisanale, persiste à côté du modernisme de ce qu'on appellera "Les Halles". L'auteur décrit la vie, les rapports quotidiens et les intrigues des personnages typiques de ce monde commerçant. Parallèlement, un homme, Florent, revient du bagne. Étranger à ce monde, pourra-t-il s'y intégrer et conserver sa liberté alors que la communauté des marchands file son destin sans être contrariée par les drames qui se nouent dans son sein.
