Publisher's Summary

Sleeping Beauty plunges detective Lew Archer into a fascinating and intricate case connected to a disastrous oil spill on the Southern California coast. He becomes involved with three generations of the imposing Lennox family whose offshore oil platform caused the spill; and whose young heiress, glimpsed for a haunting moment on the beach -- clutching an oil-drenched sea bird in her arms -- has disappeared. While on her trail Archer finds himself journeying into a horrendous past, into the hidden lives of a family twisted by money, power, and a compulsive instinct for infidelity -- between husbands and wives, parents and children, friends, dependents, duty, and ultimately to the earth itself.

What the Critics Say

"Not since the novels of Nathaniel West has the theme of American innocence grinding to a stop at the polluted waters of the Pacific so consistently reverberated through a body of writing." (Detroit News)

Most Helpful

Great story, terrible audio

What disappointed you about Sleeping Beauty?

The narrator seemed to change voice. He was also doing the narration down a cardboard tube. should have bought a good microphone with a pop shield.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sleeping Beauty?

Great twists at the end quarter

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was good; but the recording of him was dire.

What character would you cut from Sleeping Beauty?

Any additional comments?

Needs a modern recording to really make this book stand out as it should. I suggest David Soul would be ideal?
