Before 'The Help' there was The Color Purple. A book that will stay with you for a long time. It is made far more meaningful as it is beautifully narrated by the author, so you know that the spoken nuances and inflections are exactly what Alice Walker wanted to convey. In her acknowledgements, she thanks the characters of the book for coming, and that is how the book develops, the characters, telling their interweaving stories of hopes, heartaches, love, rejection and destiny. Delightful.

We were heading to NYC and had booked tickets for a musical version of The Color Purple on Broadway so I thought I'd read the book first.
Miss Celie tells her story, which moves along quickly, and through her eyes the characters are brought to life. It is brilliantly narrated and is the sort of book that lives with you long after it is finished. It is a story of a harsh life but it is not without humour or beauty.
The musical is fantastic, too, by the way.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I have listened to other books with similar themes but find this very disappointing.
What could Alice Walker have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Perhaps a different narrator would provide better expression than the author did.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Color Purple to be better than the print version?
This is one of those audiobooks that was a joy to listen to. I can't imagine that Alice Walker's words on the page could match those same words straight from her heart.
What does Alice Walker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Staggering emotion. Lovely.
