Summary

Exclusively from Audible

Plantaganet Palliser, Prime Minister of England - a man of power and prestige, with all the breeding and inherited wealth that goes with it - is appalled at the inexorable rise of Ferdinand Lopez. An exotic impostor, seemingly from nowhere, Lopez has society at his feet, while well-connected ladies vie with each other to exert influence on his behalf - even Palliser's own wife, Lady Glencora. But when the interloper makes a socially advantageous marriage, Palliser must decide whether to stand by his wife's support for Lopez in a by-election or leave him to face exposure as a fortune-hunting adventurer.

The fifth audiobook in Trollope's six-volume Palliser series, it is a story of social, sexual and domestic politics. The Prime Minister raises one of the most enduring questions in government - whether a morally scrupulous gentleman can make an effective leader.

With beautifully developed characters, Trollope intertwines the political and domestic stories, analysing the politics behind both government and marriage.

The author of 47 novels and many short stories he was one of the most prolific and successful novelists of the Victorian era with his work remaining popular and well-loved throughout the ages.

So Vert Relevant to Today

Unsurprisingly, this is the most political of the novels so far, but it seems to me that the issues contained are the most familiar to modern society. Here are matters of women's rights (as still exist in parts of the world), of the power and misuse to the press, of class and mental health. Two marriages are contrasted in a way that would not be out of place on Channel 5. There is a character that would certainly be portrayed as autistic in a modern drama and another who is a text book narcissistist. There is even a prominent man with a flock of illegitimate children who 'liked wives but soon tired of his own.'

The usual

Yet another episode in the Palliser soap opera filled with gender, class and parliamentary politics. Not my favourite but still worth a listen.

Perfect casting for Pallister chronicles

I loved hearing Timothy West, accompanying me whilst driving, cooking, washing my car and especially whilst gardening. I trust his narration even with some of the convoluted political stuff. Marvellous.

OK but not Trollope’s best

Trollope was very anglocentric & described younger Duke of Omnium as PM of England but that’s no excuse for writer of Audible’s blurb doing the same! The Lopez plot line is inferior to his usual but the book is part of a series & there’s continuity with some familiar characters who continue into the final book. Timothy West narrates very well both these political novels & Barsetshire series.

Masterful performance

Yet another brilliant narration by Timothy West. I don’t think anyone could do these books better.
I have to admit Emily was such a weak character, she drove me mad but still a wonderful story which I thoroughly enjoyed.

sad ending for the pallisers

this has been my least favourite book in the series so far. I think the Duke and duchess didnt deserve what happened to them in this story. I feel the rough injustice against planty pal. but I'll finish the series and hope for redemption for them
