Summary

This great novel, written by one of Spain's most respected writers, Pio Baroja, contains wonderful adventure, with much running, fighting, and shooting. It also has subtle humor and offers a satirical commentary on church and state during a time of civil conflict. Translated by James P. Diendl, this is a keen representation of Spain in the late 19th century by a well-respected Basque novelist.

Embarrassing pronunciations

I am sorry to report that Mr. Giorgio, however eager a reader, has not bothered to search out any correct pronunciations. And he can't be familiar with Spanish to say nothing of basque.
How can fur-MEEN become FUR-min and mar-TEEN MAR-tin?
How can San Jean Pied-a-Port be wrongly pronounced? And Bera? And St Etienne de Baigorri?
How can Gipuzkoa — a province! — be rendered as I-forget-what but surely, utterly wrong.
There are dozens of errors. It's embarrassing to listen to.
