Summary
Exclusive to Audible! Listen to a discussion between the author and the narrator of Coffin Road at the end of this recording.
A man stands bewildered on a deserted beach on the Hebridean Isle of Harris. He cannot remember who he is. The only clue to his identity is a folded map of a path named the Coffin Road. He does not know where this search will take him.
A detective from Lewis sits aboard a boat, filled with doubt. DS George Gunn knows that a bludgeoned corpse has been discovered on a remote rock 20 miles offshore. He does not know if he has what it takes to uncover how and why.
A teenage girl lies in her Edinburgh bedroom, desperate to discover the truth about her scientist father’s suicide. Two years on, Karen Fleming still cannot accept that he would wilfully abandon her. She does not yet know his secret.
Coffin Road follows three perilous journeys towards one shocking truth - and the realisation that ignorance can kill us.

Intriguing thriller.
Possibly the best yet of Peter May's Scottish crime novels, with a unique twist, encompassing current environmental issues.

Immersive world
I think Peter May is a wonderful writer and I picked this up after hugely enjoying the Lewis Trilogy. While I enjoyed Coffin Road, I felt it didn't have the utterly compelling pace of the earlier novels, but it was still very, very good.
I think the characterisation also lacked the depth that characters from his earlier novels have enjoyed.
Peter May's singular talent is to make living, breathing people and, while this is several leagues ahead of his contemporaries, it isn't entirely up to his usual standard of riveting excellence.
However, like me, if you love Peter May's Lewis Trilogy, you will like this.

Just keep going....
What did you like most about Coffin Road?
This is yet another AMAZING story by Peter May and while it 'follows' the Lewis trilogy, as such, it is not a direct follow on.
HOWEVER, on thing I would advise readers is that it takes a while to get going but when it does.......Oh La La!!
What did you like best about this story?
I found the story slightly hard going until about 1/2 way through the story, but when the links start to fall into place it seems to be so easy to follow and I found myself thinking I'd missed something earlier. But the way the story runs leaves you guessing and double-guessing right until the end.
What does Peter Forbes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Peter Forbes is a really good narrator who brings a wide range of emotions and personalities to his voice which enlighten the story and, as any good narrator should, he makes it easy to follow who is speaking at every turn.

Such a great listen
Its the mix of the styles of May's prose and Forbes' narration that makes this such a great listen. Gripping, but like Gunn and Maclean calm, introspective, at the pace of the rain and the squalls. I loved it. So much to discover, from the opening page, right through.

Back on Form for Peter May.
Would you listen to Coffin Road again? Why?
No, as I rarely listen to a book twice. But this was Peter May's best in the Scottish series since The Blackhouse.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Angus and the dog. Why because they were more underwritten.
Have you listened to any of Peter Forbes’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Yes, I believe he has narrated quite a few of Peter Mays book.s
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
The bees are coming.
Any additional comments?
Very enjoyable listen.

Absolutely brilliant
Peter May is a master of story telling. His books hold your attention from the first word to the last. I've listened to maybe a dozen of his books and they are all enjoyable. This is no exception. He even managed to reference two characters from another book. Just a single sentence but it brought a smile to my face. Like hearing about a distant relative 😊.

Brilliant!
Read this as part of a book group and really enjoyed it.
The story is really topical (bee decline) and full of twists and turns, making it a real pleasure to read.
The descriptions of the Scottish island scenery is amazing and the characters are so well drawn that you get really involved with them.
I would thoroughly recommend this - in fact I have to friends and family!
