Summary

"A few years ago, I became one of the founders of the llisu Dam Campaign, [dedicated to stopping] a government-backed project to build a dam in the Kurdish region of Turkey. This audio programme is a recording of a show I did about the campaign, the people, and the dam. The show was recorded days after we had found out that the campaign was a success. At the end of the show, many of those involved in the campaign piled onstage to celebrate: Kurds, environmentalists, human-rights campaigners, activists, lawyers, and crusty chums. It was quite an exciting and memorable night."

Brilliant!

Brilliantly written and read. The great story of a social movement. I have the greatest admiration for Mark Thomas, the action he takes and his political ideals.

"We f**king WON...!!"

"...and earlier on today, we just found out, we f**king WON...!
:-j

Ah, yes - 'won'... For those amongst, if you're on the Left.... 'Won'.... I realise that you may not be quite familiar with this phenomenon, or maybe perhaps you remember once experiencing this feeling, long, long ago...."

If the last 10 mins of the struggles of the Kurdish Dambusters and their stories, as narrated and recounted by Mark Thomas does not make you weep, then you might want to check your soul is still in one piece and attached to your eyelids, because otherwise it's likely to be either seriously defective, or it has come loose in transit somewhere along the way and slipped away completely.

A heroic real life moral fable for these dark days living under the Wars of Terror.

Political stand-up at its best!

Thomas begins light-hearted, satyrical and informative. He recounts his ingenious group actions to stop the dam. Then he describes his encounters with the Kurdish victims of Turkish human rights abuses, in an awe-inspiring diatribe. I have always loved Thomas' performances, despite his liberal use of strong language.

Inspired

I first became aware of Mark's work from his C4 shows, and to this day I try to never let an opportunity to hear his stuff pass by.

His ability to point out the ludicrous / unjust / bordering illegal / just plain selfish actions of so many of today's 'big corporations' (both business & government) has yet to be surpassed, and each time I hear him I am left wondering 'Why aren't I taking action like him?' so thought provoking are his words & deeds

Oh, and he's very very funny as well, so that helps.
