Publisher's Summary

February 2012. Somewhere in the North Atlantic. In an increasingly uncertain defence environment, a deadly new arms race has begun. In an attempt to secure her boundaries, Britain has deployed the very latest sub-sea military technology. Beneath and beyond the front line, these are the adventures of the HMS Goliath. A 55,000 tonne M-Class nuclear stealth submarine, prowling 5,000 metres below the surface, manned by idiots.A hilarious sitcom that Time Out called "a cracker" and the Sunday Telegraph described as "written with nutty aplomb", "Deep Trouble" is written by and stars Ben Willbond and Jim Field Smith. This is the complete Series 1. In the first episode Captain Wade discovers that coffee and torpedoes dont mix, Lieutenant Jack Trainor accidentally finds the exit door and Commander Alison Fairbanks gets involved in a food fight. In Episode 2, a team of US Navy SEALS descend on the ship, causing sinews to stiffen and hearts to flutter. In Episode 3 a visit by the admiral throws the boat into chaos, as well as ruining a Sea Harrier, a Russian S200 submarine and a perfectly good stationary cupboard. Finally in Episode 4, its homeward bound, as a stray astronaut and a rock band cause confusion in both Captain Wades head and Portsmouth...

Laughed once in one hour, 52 minutes

Would you try another book written by Jim Field Smith and Ben Willbond or narrated by the narrator?

The narration is generally okay with the exception of the odd fake accent. Bonus points for the Russian in Episode 3. The writing is desperately unfunny, though.

What could Jim Field Smith and Ben Willbond have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

There are some funny elements, but for me it would've needed a lot of rewriting. Maybe a term at the John Fennimore school of comedy?

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Listening to this eventually gave me a slight headache. Eventually I decided to listen to Cabin Pressure for the eighteenth time instead. I will probably return this one to Audible as I cannot imagine any circumstance in which I would want to listen to it again.

Any additional comments?

I was disappointed. Perhaps other people will enjoy it more.

If this is comedy then we are in deep trouble

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, it is simplistic comedy reliant upon repetition of annoying mannerisms. Story lines are weak and it is as though the performers realise this and can't remedy it .

Would you ever listen to anything by Jim Field Smith and Ben Willbond again?

Probably not

Did Deep Trouble inspire you to do anything?

Not to buy season 2, if there ever is one.
