Summary

France’s Périgord region is the home of the black truffle and at five thousand euros a kilo, the exquisite ‘Black Diamond’ is a treasured local asset. When reports come in that this unique delicacy is being adulterated with a cheaper Chinese version, Captain Bruno Courrèges is asked to investigate the scam. But matters take a much darker turn when a horrific murder occurs, and Bruno has his work cut out to find the connection between present crimes and long-buried ones that are linked to France’s colonial past.

The best so far

This one was the best so far. The pace was faster. The plot complicated with twists. The characters are familiar now and I liked the narrator.

I really enjoyed this one.

Third book and again I really appreciated the twists in the book that kept twists in the story even though you had inklings of what would be found out next.
The previous stories had set up Bruno's love interests well so there was a wealth of backing information to call on to develop even further.
The narration is good and Bill Wallis's voice suits Bruno's character.. I always enjoy series books better when the books are narrated by the same person unless it is needs to be someone different to add to a different perspective by a character or a similar reason that adds to the story or plot.

Looking forward to the next. I hope you are enjoying these as much as me.

Good suspense story

It's probably impossible to write an authentic or convincing story about someone else's country - I've lived in England half my life, but couldn't claim to understand how it works! Still, if you regard Martin Walker's books as science-fiction of a sort, they are intriguing and well plotted, full of twists and turns, good fantasy.

Excellent narration makes this book

I was glad I read the first of the series on Kindle as the Audible narrator would have stopped me buying, and reading, it and I would have missed a great series. Sadly the narrator changes again and I am not sure I will buy the rest of the series from book 5 onward, and may well return to Kindle as he just doesn't have what Bill Wallis brings to the tale.

Favourite new series! Another wonderful mystery.

Bruno, Chief of Police is quickly becoming my favourite new series! I love the blend of the gorgeous French countryside, lots of culinary descriptions and references, fascinating historical bits and pieces and a solid mystery.
"Black Diamond" is another excellent murder mystery set in St. Denis, beautifully written, plotted and paced. The story of Bruno and his little town with all its fascinating people continues...

A bit too parochial for me!

This story wandered all over the place, but if you can keep track of it, it seems to come together (quite hurriedly) in the end.I
Pleasant.
