Summary

Shetland Detective Jimmy Perez knows it will be a difficult homecoming when he returns to the Fair Isles to introduce his fiancée, Fran, to his parents. Challenging to live on at the best of times, with the autumn storms raging, the island feels cut off from the rest of the world.
Trapped, tension is high and tempers become frayed when a woman's body is discovered at the renowned Fair Isles bird observatory, with feathers threaded through her hair. The islanders react with fear and anger.
With no support from the mainland and only Fran to help him, Jimmy has to investigate the old-fashioned way – and quickly. There's a killer on the island just waiting for the opportunity to strike again.

SLOW oh so very slow....

this was a very SLOW story -- it seemed very dragged out - with the denouement repeated in case we hadn't got it. Did not enjoy the performer, accents slipping and not maintained. Dreadful midlands accent for one character. Not a book to listen to whilst driving as I dozed off a couple of times (safe in armchair).
Very little in way of any exciting action, felt I had done well to stick with it to the end.

Back on track

I was working my through the series, but almost gave up after Red Bones which I didn't enjoy so much. I only carried on as I had already bought this audiobook.

My interest has been recaptured and I am now well into Dead Water. I think I can guess what life has in store for Jimmy Pérez, but maybe I'm wrong again.

Watch the series instead

This book went on and on, and about 1/2 the way through I found I was wishing it would end. A better narrator would undoubtedly improved the experience at least a little. His voices were ghastly, his timing was poor, and often his emphasis or tone were wrong. I'm not sure why I kept listening, except that I wanted to find how it turned out. Unfortunately. The ending was lame, and I'm not sure whether I was so bored that I missed the reason for the last murder or if there actually was none.
