Summary

On a hot August day in 1994, 76 holidaymakers travel to an island off the North Norfolk coast. Only 75 return alive - a young man is murdered, the case left unsolved. Twenty years later, using state-of-the-art forensics, the DNA results of a blood-soaked towel prompt DI Peter Shaw to summon all 75 original suspects to a mass screening. But one of them, the beautiful Marianne Osbourne, is found dead in her bed. Is there a link to the 1994 murder? DI Shaw and DS Valentine become immersed in the dark secrets of an isolated community.

These improve with time

Finally beginning to enjoy the relationship between the main characters which seemed rather odd in the earlier books. The antagonism of the Chief Constable is a little unbelievable, he's supposed to feel threatened by DI Shaw but that's not credible, the distance between their ranks means it wouldn't be possible for Shaw to be a threat to his position. It makes for a little extra side interest but would work far better if it was Shaws Chief Inspector or superintendent behaving in this way.

Entertaining but far fetched

Entertaining story but stretches the bounds of credibility. Kelly seems weirdly fixated by the second world war and can't resist the urge to shoehorn in world war bunkers and supplies. I guessed who dun it and the supposed twist fairly early on. Too many sub plots which are then gathered up in a highly unlikely confessional speech at the end. Interesting and accurate descriptions of East Anglia, however this is not his best book. I enjoyed the water clock more.

Brilliant, engaging, exciting!

I love the Jim Kelly ‘valentine and shaw’ series! Not only are they full of twists and turns but they bring the Norfolk coast to life. I am so sad the rest of the series is not on audible and hope they fix this soon!
