Summary

Sandor is a wonderful storyteller, and little Joe is ready to listen. The power of the educated over the simple is horribly clear in this disturbing and unusual relationship. As Sandor’s motivation both for rescuing little Joe and then for weaving his spell of words becomes clear, the darkness surrounding him is too much for them both, and for the beautiful ex-model sequestered in her Suffolk mansion by an obsessive husband.

A net of fear, greed, love, and desire closes around them in a landscape that heightens the contrast between man and the natural world.

I'd like to give this 3.5 stars.

I last listened to 'A dark adapted Eye' and thoughy it was really great so I tried this. I found big chunks of this book slow and a lot of the characterisation unsubtle. However 'little Joe' intrigued me and the pace picked up towards the end.

Stunning

What made the experience of listening to Gallowglass the most enjoyable?

I loved the way that each character was developed; each person behaved in way that you could understand from the perfect way that the author had described them, right to the end.

What other book might you compare Gallowglass to, and why?

T

Which character – as performed by Dermot Crowley – was your favourite?

I very much enjoyed Dermot Crowley's narration. He brought all the characters to life and in a strange way, Little Joe became my favourite. I just wanted to rescue him from these dreadful people who were using and abusing him.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The price of love

Story below par for this Author

I've read a few Barbara Vine books and this is my least favourite. I don't hate it but I don't love it. There's no real 'meat' to it. Its just OK to me. A pleasant time killer.

Haunting

Little Joe and Sandor are arguably the two most memorable characters ever created by this fine novelist. I highly recommend checking out the dramatisation available online, too, starring Michael Sheen as the endearingly vulnerable Little (6ft) Joe. Dermot Crowley's parade of voices is very good, and really brings the story to life.

I don’t have a clue as to what this book is about. I have had to stop listening to it as it is sooooo boring!!!! I pity the narrator!

Poor narration

Unfortunately I couldn’t get into the story due to the poor accent of the reader. Narrators should speak properly. This narrators accent is abysmal.

Abridged!

I have read this book in paperback, so was surprised that the audio version omitted the last couple of chapters, thus changing the plot. I complained to Audible...
