Summary

When Mahony returns to Mulderrig, a speck of a place on Ireland's west coast, he brings only his handsome face, a photograph of his long-lost mother and a determination to do battle with the village's lies.

Mahony also somehow wakes the dead from their graves, with their foggy memories and hidden stories floating greyly amongst the unseeing living. No one, though - living or dead - will be able to guess what happened to the teenage mother who abandoned him as a baby.

Critic reviews

"It’s utterly original and deeply enjoyable. It smacks you in the face from the first page and for the rest of the novel strokes your cheek." ( Canongate)

Unbeatable

One of the best novels I’ve ever read and I’ve read thousands. Haunting, lyrical, hilarious in parts. I wept and laughed in equal measure. Beautiful. Unforgettable.

my favourite ever audio book...

One of the best stories I've heard in a long time! the characters are ones you'd fall in love with, the story line is unique and relatable. I loved it. gripped till the end, wrapped up perfectly and was read brilliantly by Aiden Kelly. He brought the story to life with his humour and respect for the prose x

The best book for years

This has to rank in the top 10 of the most well written, poetic, funny, vicious fantasy-cum-murder mystery novels I have ever read. It is the sort of book that makes would-be authors weep with a sense of ineptitude. Ok, well that's how I felt.

The narration was wonderful. With so very many characters it would be easy to lose track of who was who: not so here.

With 3 of my own family surnames, towns I know and expression that had me snorting, I would say it is an Irish treat, no matter where you are from.

Loved this, felt as though I was being told an old faerie tale, carried along by the narration and the story.
Thank you

Fair play to you Jess Kidd

This is a playful comic of a book, with great characters and some inspired language. It has the absurdity and cadence of Flann O’Brien but is more accessible and less self-indulgent.

I bought the paper version for the non-audiophiles in the house.

The narrator is exceptional, but the real star is the author. What a great and silly and funny and diverting journey, she has pulled from her mind. Hopefully her deep well of imagination will have much more to yield.

Death and the Penguin meets The Butcher Boy

A truly joyous discovery - a literary, dark, mystery novel whose humour is imbued with a whacky touch of magic realism. The writer’s deftly original use of language and characterisation means that Jess Kidd is an author we will all, given time, be hearing much more about. I cannot wait for more - and Aiden Kelly has played a blinder here: I finished it an hour ago and I’m missing it already :(
