Summary

Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past. This is Smith's fifth investigation, but this time it's personal.

Best so far

When the book started I wondered where it was going was DC going to be robbed or even murdered.
In previous books Smith's Northern Ireland experience but now we hear much more and meet his past, its a lovely book with much excitement you really don't want to stop, I did guess something which I found at the end I was correct.
Not so much humour in this one but still the odd laugh out loud moment and a few smiles.
Narration was good no need for a Norfolk accent here still wish he would learn a Norfolk accent for the rest of the books,
I am really not sure how a reviewer thought this book was boring this book as loads of excitement. I really enjoy Smith and please Peter keep him going.

Wonderful series of books

I’ve only ‘read’ these books via audio, but can’t imagine any other way now thanks to the excellent performance by the narrator. The central character is presented with a subtlety and charm that is very engaging.

Best (so far) of a great series

I have enjoyed this entire series on Audible and was looking forward to this book's release - which was perfectly timed for me being flat on my back for a few days. Alas I finished the book in one day which is the best endorsement I can give. Somewhat different from the rest of the series but an excellent story with usual excellent narration. One of the very few books I gave five stars in each category. Looking forward to the next book.

Best novel in a marvelous detective series!

Detective thrillers do not get better than In the Bright Future! This is Book 5 in the English detective DC Smith series. Smith is on forced leave and he goes to Northern Ireland and deals with people from his past. Gildart Jackson does his usual wonderful job of narration.

If you like the mystery/thriller genre, this is a must listen novel. It's definitely one of the best of the year.
