I have enjoyed the 'Moon Detective Agency' series by JR Rain and this has sprouted from that. The main character, Jim Knighthorse, is the son of a minor character in one of the Moon Series. This series has no vampires, werewolves etc, and is set in the current U.S.A. Jim is starting his own agency and in book one, we see his internal battle for which direction his life should take while he solves a murder of a high school student.
All three books are light hearted and easy to listen/read. I particularly love the conversations he has with the vagrant in his local McDonald's. Asking him question I have sometimes thought.
This book, being a collection of 3 was worth it's credit but if I had to buy them separately, I would think twice as each book is only 4 to 5 hours in length.
I can say I really enjoyed the 3 in 1 and would recommend it.
The stories were engaging and there were a few winks to the Samantha moon series which I also enjoyed.
These stories are a lot of fun. The protagonist shares many attributes with Spencer Quinn's dog hero, Chet, even to being color blind. He is a big puppy-like guy, all innocence and self-confidence . . . but of course with sharp teeth and the urge to bite. The up-side: fast-moving stories with lots of humor and glib repartee. The down side: a character at a burger joint called God, to whom our hero discusses philosophical issues. This subtext grows a bit cloying, feels a bit like proselytizing (at worst), a bit too much like Yoda (at best). Still, a good buy on a nice collection of related stories.
