Not at all up to par for Jance
None of the three books in this particular Jance series compare favorably with her others, but this one, I would rate the lowest. Although I found the stories of the Tohono O'Odham tribe interesting, I thought her Tohono O'Odham characters themselves were very idealized and quite unbelievable. The writing/storyline itself bogged down badly as well.
This review should not discourage anyone away from her other series, though -- especially the Joanna Brady ones.

I enjoyed reading this book in print...
As a long-time Jance fan, I've read all of her works multiple times. I hadn't revisited this story in the last year, and I find that I don't care for this one any more. The reader doesn't have a great range of voices for bringing diverse characters to life, and also has a reading rhythm that doesn't quite work for me. Frankly, a reader can make or break a book. While George Guidall can't read them all, I certainly wish he could read more of them.
Other stories featuring Lani and the Walkers are much better, or at least less disturbing to listen to. Perhaps that's the issue - the villain is so VERY villainous in this one. In print I could skim past the less appealing segments; in audio, I can only wince and wait.
A more adept reader could perhaps make that wait less uncomfortable.
