Der Flensburger Hauptkommissar John Benthien wohnt wann immer möglich in seinem verwitterten Kapitänshaus auf Sylt. In dessen Nähe verunglücken an einem düsteren Oktobermorgen zwei Jungen tödlich. War es ein Unfall oder Mord?
Benthien beginnt zu ermitteln. Wie sich herausstellt, waren die Zwillinge Feriengäste in der Pension Astarte. Dort, in dem uralten Friesenhaus, erwartet den Kommissar Schreckliches: Eine Frau wurde brutal erstickt. Noch hat Benthien keine Ahnung, dass dies nicht der letzte Todesfall bleiben wird, der die kleine Pension heimsucht.
