Publisher's Summary

Ex-actress Libby Sarjeant is producing and directing a play in her home village of Steeple Martin. She never expected her exciting new venture to lead to romance: and she certainly didn't expect mystery, intrigue, and murder. When a series of accidents culminates in murder being committed, Libby is compelled to find out if its roots are in the past or the more sordid present. A cast of local characters alternately helps and hinders her, including Fran the sceptical psychic and Sidney the guard cat.

Insipid is the word

I am quite a fan of the 'cozy' mystery but this was more 'humdrum' than 'cozy' and I have found very little to enjoy.

The story revolves around an Amateur Dramatics Group who are putting on a Play based on real events, written by a local guy.

The narrator is ok with female voices if a little irritating but her masculine voices are bad, I had trouble distinguishing which character was supposed to be speaking. However, this was not the main problem as I had a problem getting into the story for the first 2 to 3 hours.

I became a little more engaged at the point of Murder occurring but very little was made of the Murder itself, everything pretty much carried on as before, the Play would carry on, the characters that were against the play carried on in the same vein and I became bored once again, there was another vaguely interesting segment at around 7 hours when the 'True' version of events behind the Play are revealed but then I found myself plummeted back into the humdrum once more.

I have not finished the book, I shall not do so either, I am most disappointed with it, I found all the characters annoying, the main protagonist, Libby, being the most irritating amongst them all.

I would not recommend this book as I did not enjoy, nor even finish it but I may have been spoiled for this type of mystery as I am a great fan of Rebecca Tope and Elly Griffiths who write much more life into their characters in my opinion.

an enjoyable start to the series.

Any additional comments?

this story had two time lines, the first in the present where libby is directing a play and the time that the play is based on.
libby is the main character and there are a number of people, mainly men, who are important too, who I think will be in the following episodes of the series
i thought the characters were well written and patience Tomlinson did really well in giving each character a different voice, especially fran who has a deep husky voice
this has the potential of being as good as the rhona parish series by anthea fraser.
