Summary

Darkness lives within....

Cash strapped, working for agencies and living in shared accommodation, Stephanie Booth feels she can fall no further. So when she takes a new room at the right price, she believes her luck has finally turned. But 82 Edgware Road is not what it appears to be.

It's not only the eerie atmosphere of the vast, neglected house or the disturbing attitude of her new landlord, Knacker McGuire, that makes her uneasy - it's the whispers behind the fireplace, the scratching beneath floors, the footsteps in the dark and the young women weeping in neighbouring rooms. And when Knacker's cousin, Fergal, arrives, the danger goes vertical.

But this is merely a beginning, a gateway to horrors beyond Stephanie's worst nightmares. And in a house where no one listens to the screams, will she ever get out alive?

I just can't listen any more

I am looking at almost 14 more hours of this book and can't do it. I suppose this could be considered a spoiler...but theres nothing to spoil. Working girl takes a cheap apartment. No money, poor pay. Grungy neighbors and landlord and she feels frightened of nothing tangible...

THATS IT. FOR HOURS. More Grunginess, more ill defined fear of nothing. I cannot do it. I have ill defined fear that this is VERY pointless. I am sorry Mr. Nevill. Returned.

Too long. Much too long.

I saw a few reviews praising this novel and a few complaining of its length. I'm afraid I'm in the complainers' camp on this one. I found this book several hours too long.

A book of two halves. The first half felt a little muddled and often rather repetitive. The second half felt like an hour would have more than covered the story. All in all, it felt to me like the story could be told in half the length without losing anything. The main character seemed to repeat herself over and over and narrative was almost constantly, and unnecessarily reminding the reader of previous events. When I still had four hours to go I sped up the playback, just to be done with it and it ended as I had predicted hours before.

Sadly, I never felt afraid or nervous and lost the will to care about the main character.

However, the narration was excellent and brought as much life as was possible into the story.

Dark

Genuinely scary dark horrible imagery. This Adam Nevill chap is twisted. Strong story line and narration very good indeed. This is the first time I have ever considered turning it off as it was so horrible.......but brilliant. Highly recommended.....thanks Mr. Nevill and Ms. Prendergast.

absolutly brilliant!

I absolutely loved this book. I have had troubles finding a book that chills me to the core like this did. I have listened to Adam Nevilles other book the ritual and the way he writes is just out of this world. I love the fact that it is all played out in England as well. defiantly recommend this book to my fellow horror fans.

Good story, irritating narrator

I’d previously listened to The Ritual by the same author & really enjoyed it so was looking forward to this one. I have to admit that initially I was a bit bored and found the narration of the main character very annoying. It took me a couple of months to finish this book as I kept stopping and moving on to something else. The first part was very good, lots of really tense & harrowing chapters but then found it started to waffle on and used far too many adjectives, it could have been two hours shorter at least. The last 3 hours were very creepy and was glad when my husband came to bed because I was so scared! All in all very good story but a different narrator would have made it much better.

Too long?

On the whole I enjoyed this book but was shocked to find myself thinking..is it nearly over? This to me proves it was a tad on the long side and started to feel like it was padded out with unnecessary and repetitive story! Just get on with it!!
It was nice to get a 'what happens after' but it just seemed to turn into more of the same!

MastaPIECE

Nothing like an incredible folk horror set in the desolate wastes of Birmingham, West Midlands. I was unsure which Adam Neville novel to start off with, but I’m so glad I chose this one. I’ll absolutely be checking out more.

Great story, but far too long!

I have really enjoyed this book, but listening to it has been a bit like eating a large, dense bowl of muesli. I savoured the pops of flavour and story as I dutifully munched through it, but getting to the end was a bit of an undertaking! At least I was left feeling satisfied and with a sense of accomplishment!

The setting immediately pulled me in, as it is set in Birmingham, chiefly around the Handsworth/Perry Barr area, and I both lived and studied there as a student. I temporarily lived in a house very similar to the nightmare location described and was chuckling away as Steph handed out food samples in the oh so familiar Bull Ring shopping centre.

I never quite got on with the narrator. Her delivery is very clear and her voice isn't unpleasant, but her tone made me think more of children's stories than gory, gothic horror tales. I couldn't put my finger on it, but there was a disconnect with what she was saying and her tone. This is very picky, but her pronunciation of specific words also got under my skin, particularly if the author was fond of using them e.g. 'Absurd' - 'Abzurd', 'Desolate' - 'Dezolate' and 'Waterstones' - 'Waterstuns' etc.

Her voices for some of the secondary characters were fine, but I laughed at the voice of the main character from start to finish. Once I realised that she sounded exactly like Wendolene Ramsbottom from 'Wallace and Gromit - A Close Shave', I couldn't unhear it. The meek but determined Steph ended up sounding ridiculous to me, particularly when swearing - which the character does a fair bit of.

The story is really fantastic overall and some of the characters will stay in my mind for a long time - particularly Knacker, who was so vividly brought to life. However, I feel that this book is a perfect example of the importance of editing. It is just far too long. It could be half the length and still as gripping (probably like this review!) There aren't really any distinct 'weak' sections which could be removed, it is largely down to pacing overall. I found myself tuning out a few times and lost momentum in the middle as I needed a break! A skilled editor with a good sense of exactly what the audience needs in order for the story to move forward would work wonders with this book.
