Not a lot of the mystery
The premise for this story isn't bad, an ex forces and ex police officer who is now a private investigator asked to find out what happened to a schoolmate who disappeared ten years ago. However the author chose to concentrate more on Bruce's battle with alcohol and his relationship with his girlfriend than on the mystery.
This is a shame as the book is well written and the solution to the mystery is genuinely a surprise and if the balance between the, rather overused in private investigator stories, alcohol issue and the mystery investigation had been different I would have rated it a solid four stars.
The narration was skillfully done if a little lacking in emotion, which again is a shame as a better depiction of Bruce's conflict over alcohol might have made that part of the story more involving.
