Compelling listening

After thoroughly enjoying Charlaine Harris' Midnight Texas series, I was looking for more from this author other than her Sookie Stackhouse novels. ( I had watched the TV series and felt that was enough) Although there is nothing in the least bit paranormal about Lily Bard, I enjoyed the series just as much as Midnight Texas, if not more. Harris has very effectively combined a pretty dark theme with the cozy mystery format and Lily Bard turns out to be a very complex and compelling character. This first instalment in the series is a bit of a slow burner as we learn about Lily's backstory and are introduced to the interesting inhabitants of Shakespeare. I didnt mind in the least as Lily Bard is such an intriguing character and Julia Gibsons rich narration brings Lily and the small southern town of Shakespears perfectly to life.

Good start

Not the deepest of mysteries but I think this first in a series was more about character building and scene setting. I really warmed to Lily. She's well thought out and interesting and I want to see what way she develops as the lead character. Little hints at a real romance in an unexpected place too.
Narration was perfect.
