Summary

The loveable full-time priest and part-time detective, Canon Sidney Chambers, continues his sleuthing adventures.
On a snowy Thursday morning in Lent 1964, a stranger seeks sanctuary in Grantchester's church, convinced he has murdered his wife. Sidney and his wife Hildegard go for a shooting weekend in the country and find their hostess has a sinister injury.
Sidney's friend Amanda receives poison pen letters. Meanwhile, on the home front, Sidney's new curate Malcolm seems set to become rather irritatingly popular with the parish; his baby girl Anna learns to walk and talk; Hildegard longs to get an au pair and Sidney is offered a promotion. Entertaining and deeply humane, these six new stories are bound to delight the clerical detective's many fans.

Better than the TV series

Very interesting, with a good mix of mystery and history. I even had to look up if there was a flood in Florence.... read the book to find out.

Better than the TV series!

I will never understand why the books were not more closely used in the Granchester series in TV. The characters and storylines are excellent and more believable than those in the TV series .

Sidney Chambers Matures

This entry in Runcie's excellent mystery series is somewhat different from the first three books in the series. Instead of one long novel it's really a collection of six longer stories that are spread out through the year 1966. Be aware that we can't really call it Grantchester anymore as Sidney has a new job, a new house, and a slightly different more mature approach. Gone is the young vicar of previous books.

These stories take on serious and occasionally disturbing issues that include domestic violence and child abuse. The stories are sometimes spooky or really just a bit creepy and often ended without a clear conclusion. Runcie captures a darker mood but retains his positive take on life with all its complexities and uncertainties.

I enjoyed the book and the maturing of the characters and their lives. Recommended if you like thoughtful stories that focus on an Anglican priest who puzzles out mysteries that involve people in his life. I thought it was good.
