Summary

The compelling new Dr. Temperance Brennan novel from the world-class forensic anthropologist and number-one best-selling author Kathy Reichs.

When forensic anthropologist Dr. Tempe Brennan is approached by amateur detective Hazel 'Lucky' Strike, at first she is inclined to dismiss the woman's claims that she's matched a previously unidentified set of remains with a name. But as the words of a terrified young woman echo round her office from an audio recorder found near where the bones were discovered, something about the story won't let Tempe go.

As Tempe investigates further, she finds herself involved in a case more complicated and horrifying than she could ever have imagined.

Couldn't Get Past Chapter 1

The dramatisation of the first chapter is awful. couldn't bear to listen to any more. Buy the book!

Narration poor

What did you like most about Speaking in Bones?

The usual Kathy Reichs intrigue and tight plot and of course the complexities of forensic pathology - very addictive!

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Unfortunately the performance (reader Katherine Borowitz) was not up to her usual standard. So much so that it made me wonder if the actual production was flawed. The voice fluctuated as though everything was slowing down one moment then speeding up. Perhaps audible can let me know if there was any issues with the audio production?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Kathy Reichs unabridged cannot usually be completed in one sitting. This one will probably be completed in two.

Any additional comments?

I am addicted to forensic pathology particularly that of Kathy Reichs. Tempe relates through audio books and obviously the Bones series on TV. Hopefully she will never run out of stories.
Due to the flawed performance Speaking in Bones was a a let down and a disapointment to listen to.

Woeful

The plot is as believable as an episode of Scooby Doo. The main character is self-deluded on two counts: She sees herself as tough & able to handle danger; but she relies on men to make her feel safe, save her life & ultimately solve the case. She says she loves her boyfriend, but that's a straight lie. The boyfriend is a pure flight of fancy: no man would put up with this lack of affection, humour, concern, love, romance. He must be an imaginary friend. & finally the prose - is risible. Here are 3 examples: Ramsey shook with the priest. I hit the ladies', bought a diet coke and filled my tank. My id toggled home another data byte. Almost the worst book I've ever read.

sadly disappointed

We enjoy listening to audio books to pass the time on long car journeys. As much as we have enjoyed Tempe's books they have all become a little much of a muchness. Her row with Andy over him riding to the rescue really did annoy me as she does need someone to rescue her from a clashes with near death when she decides she is an FBI agent/Detective etc all rolled into one.

Her avoidance of discussing a future with Ryan really annoyed me this time round. She is supposedly an adult but spends her time behaving like a petulant child.

Then we reach the final chapter, no warning and hey presto all is good in the world. Nope disappointed in a big way

Enjoyed listening to it all pan out. Very detailed in parts but the end felt limp and boring.

Not one of the best 😕

A bit of a disappointment but at last Ryan and Temperance get it together. Storyline not really credible.

However it still Entertains and I learnt something new about personality disorders.

Another good Temperance Brennan story

This is another in the Temperance Brennan series of books.

The story does not deviate from the basis that we expect from this series, but there are some storylines that are tied up, or explained further by the end of the book.

One of the nicest touches for me was the introduction of a dog that has Chow in its breeding. The Chow breed has very distinctive traits, and I love seeing some of those traits come to life in this story. Even if the dog described is not a pure breed Chow.

I was impressed with the job the narrator did, of all the narrators I've heard with the Bones stories she ranks up there as one of the best.
