Summary

The sacred cat of Bubastes has accidentally been slain; now young Chebron must pay for the offense with his own life, as this is the law of the Pagans in Egypt, 1250 BC. Chebron, the son of a high Egyptian priest, flees for his life taking his sister Mysa, one of the household slaves, Amuba, and several companions with him. They escape through closely guarded Egyptian exits only to find themselves in unfamiliar and dangerous lands inhabited by a very different culture of people. Along the way, the roving band of refugees encounters and befriends a Hebrew girl, who exposes them to very strange ideas including the worship of "one true God". This arduous journey through time, customs and religion provides an adventurous and accurate insight into the ancient people of Egyptian history.

A beautiful way to absorb fascinating history...

While at first I found it hard to focus, this book grabbed me and did not let go! I have visited Egypt several times, been a docent at a huge Egyptian exhibit...but this book gave me something I did not have before: an outsiders view of the daily life of the ancient Egyptians. The main character is an educated young man from a neighboring country who is captured by the Egyptian army when his kingdom is overrun. Via his travels and experiences you gain an incredible view of daily life in Egypt. With a happy ending to boot!

Hard to Understand

This rendition was hard to listen to. We bought a Jim Hodges narration instead. Much better.
