Summary

The classic genre-defining whodunit, by the mother of the detective novel. Introducing the first American series detective, Ebenezer Gryce, The Leavenworth Case was published nine years before the debut of Sherlock Holmes, and made author Anna Katharine Green an enormously popular and influential writer who changed the mystery genre forever.

Showcasing Green's verve and style, The Leavenworth Case opens with the shocking murder of Horatio Leavenworth, a wealthy New York merchant, philanthropist, and well-known member of the community. His favorite niece, Mary, is to inherit his fortune, and all of the evidence seems to implicate her or her sister. Yet surprises greet Gryce at every turn - even before the second murder.

Absolutely brilliant

I wloved this story, I found it really satisfying, and actually quite exciting to listen to something that was the first of its kind. Really well written, entertaining, clever and charming, it is hard to believe it was written getting on for two hundred years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and will definitely read or listen to more. (This particular version was also really well narrated). Thoroughly enjoyable 😁😁😁

Long winded

I can appreciate that the book is written from a time of 1871 and obviously people reacted and behaved so differently from today but I found parts of this book frustrating and long winded padding the book out.
A very difficult book to narrate and was achieved quite well . Clever twist in the plot at the end.

A different take on a Classic Detective story.

This was an interesting story with an unexpected twist at the end. The plotting was intricate and perhaps a little convoluted, however it was spoiled by a rather flat reading, though the narrator did differentiate between the characters. Overall I enjoyed it.

Old-school pathetic type of narrative

I rarely leave a book unfinished so I managed to finish this one, but it was tedious and pathetic.

Tedious, long and boring…

Probably because the narrator - Steve Marvel - is a bit dull. Or because there is no personality.

It is written in a long laborious manner. Not a novel, but a long list of incidents related to an incurious witness by a disinterested auditor. Chapter 38 is a case in point.

I shall not read another by this author. Far too wordy.

boring

If those were amalgamated to few fewer chapters, this would have been better. Such a shame.
