Ex-homicide detective and about to be Private Investigator, Scott Maven, is asked to look into an unsolved murder of an employee of an escort agency. The client is the wealthy mother of the woman, Amber, who owns and runs Lovecraft. With no obvious suspects, and with the prospect of her own death looming, she wants to be sure that her daughter had no hand in the killing.
The narrator of this detective story is understated and pleasant to hear, with a good, even reading and character voicings. Told in the first person, Daniel Dorse takes on the personality of the investigator, the steady narration contrasting with the fast action of the character nicely. The story itself is well written and full of incident. Maven might be a good detective but he is most certainly also one lucky man, surviving numerous attacks unscathed.
Despite being an engaging mystery, however, as the book proceeded I found myself less and less able to buy into it's plausibility and even though the ending was fine it still left me dissatisfied. For this reader/ listener the characters failed to fully come to life even though their descriptions were good.
My thanks to the right's holder of The Lovecraft Murders for gifting me a copy, via Audiobook Boom. This was an enjoyable, gentle listen.

Good story, original plot
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The plot was pretty original and it kept me guessing as to who the killer was and why. It was fast paced and had just the right amount of back story and detail given for what was going on. The story was very well written. The narrator was easy to listen to. It was well worth my time.

A Short, But Good Debut P.I. Novel
I found “The Lovecraft Murders.” to be a pretty decent who-done-it from author Jack R. Stanley. Scott Kaven is a former Houston, Texas homicide detective. Now a private investigator, Kaven takes on a case involving an escort service. The story is on the short side so it moves fast with a satisfying amount of action in it. But where the book really shines, in my opinion, is with Daniel Dorse’s narration. Mr. Dorse has one of those voices that was meant for audiobook work. It also surprised me in the beginning because it is a mature voice that, at first, made me assume the lead character was a much older man. My mistake. In any event, Mr. Dorse’s voice, as well as his narration skills, just pull you into this story. I definitely enjoyed “The Lovecraft Murders” and look forward to the next book in the Scott Kaven mystery series.
