What a lovely glitzy treat!

I had been put off for ages by the bad reviews for this book, but after loving "A Friend of the Family" I thought I would risk it for a biscuit and it turned out to be a real treat.
Story was really good and all well plotted. Not a blow your socks off but cut along nicely and kept me guessing.
Loved the locations and the insight into glam Hamptons life and loved the way it was structured to give insight with an updated nod to my all time fave "Rebecca" by Daphne du Marier.
Esther Wane did a great job voicing Jem but the male characters were a bit cringy and then the American women were an out and out disaster. Jem and Nat were both a bit butter would not melt which was fine but it just all fell apart with the other character voices.
What a shame another narrator, preferably an American actress was not brought it to break it all up for those chapters which were not Jem's story as it did get pretty bad at times with a glamourpuss being voiced like a whiny 7 year old. Jarring and really did distract from the excellent story.
Will definitely look out for another from this author and may plunder the back catalogue in the hope they will be as good as this and "Friend of the Family".
I really did enjoy this as a frothy, easy luxurious read - just a shame I did not have a bit of sunshine and a pool to accompany it with as that would have been ideal.

Struggled to get through...

Unlikeable characters. I didn't care for the character that died or who killed her. Thought it was a pointless investigation and kept asking myself 'Who cares?'

Nope

Infuriating characters that were incredibly one dimensional, an obvious plot and a grating performance. Overall disappointing.

Terrible narration worst American accents I’ve ever heard!

Had to send this book back, I couldn’t concentrate on the story because of the ridiculous American accents with undercurrents of English and that were just wrong..... distractingly wrong. The narrator doesn’t just attempt one accent but has a go at several dialects.... each equally bad.

Narrators voice is annoying story is boring - girlfriends review

Got this audiobook for my girlfriend and she said she found the narrator's voice annoying especially when playing the mens parts. She found the story to be pretentious admit wax just something to listen to in the background to fall asleep to. She doesn't like to quit on books so finished it to the end but didn't like the characters or the story much. She said save the money for the audiobook and spend it on a month's membership on Netflix instead

Bad accents, becomes randomly erotic.

I struggled to get into this book. It became randomly erotic, the characters were weak and the American accents were horrendus.

Just all right

I enjoyed this book much more when I read it, and part of the problem is the narration. I imagine it's very demanding to 'do' all the characters, but every time I hear Nat, the main character's husband, my teeth are set on edge - he sounds exactly like the child in the film 'The Shining' as he cycled round the hotel corridors muttering about murder. It completely spoiled the story for me.

Decent, if lacking much oomph

Not bad. Well written and an interesting enough plot which keeps you listening readily enough. Decent set of human relationship dynamics. For once in a book of this genre, there was a fairly low quota of “corny”. What let it down slightly was a rather underwhelming denouement. It almost became an after thought in favour of taking the female lead’s life story and running with it. Frankly rather dull end, narration good on the whole with the exception of the annoying, shrill falsetto adopted for Jem which constantly made her sound like a pop-eyed thick airhead, at odds with the character.
