Summary

This compelling collection brings Baker Street's celebrated resident and his cohort, Dr Watson, out of retirement to investigate seven of the most notorious mysteries in the annals of true crime, from the murder of a London prostitute to the 1907 theft of the Irish Crown Jewels.

In Paris, Holmes and Watson become embroiled in the suspicious death of the French president; in Yokohama, they solve a mystifying case of poisoning. And on at least one occasion, the formidable powers of the great detective save the English monarchy, government, and nation.

The stories are: 'The Ghost in the Machine', 'The Case of the Crown Jewels', 'The Case of the Unseen Hand', 'The Case of the Blue Royal', 'The Case of the Camden Town Murder', 'The Case of the Missing Rifleman', and 'The Case of the Yokohama Club'.

Another lazy production's with chapters misaligned.

Spoilt by not having the chapters in the index and audio match, There seems to be an increasing number of audio books where the chapters recorded in the index and the real chapters in the audio do not have any pretense of aligning. why is this ? I cannot believe the original production's recording engineer did not record the timing of the chapters very precisely, so not having the index and audio match can only be an act of laziness by whomever converted the book to the audiable format.

Good stories but a lot of unnecessary detail

Loved the stories about the new adventures of Dr Watson and Holmes but did not enjoy the detail provided as to where all the stories and references come from in such ridiculous detail including extensive listing of the names and dates of fictional referenced publications found in “Authors Note” at the end of chapter 8.

Competent albeit bland imitation

A nicotine patch for Holmes addicts. Chapter divisions are broken. 3 stars minimum because I listened to it all.

Good idea, good narrator but a bit dull

Love the idea of injecting Homes into the narrative of real life crimes, but it's done with none of the excitement that you get in Conan Doyle's originals. These stories are very wordy and mostly lots of exposition, albeit capturing the style and tone of the originals. Modern copy cats forget Homes stories were meant to entertain folks, and they focus on style rather than substance.

Dull

Not what I'd hoped, very plain story telling lacking the charm of a normal Holmes story

its good!

Best pastiche of Holmes I've heard, and very ingeniously mixes fact and fiction by putting the Great Detective into real, historic, cases.

Disappointing book

I was really looking forward to reading this and listening to it but and there is a but, the first chapter was just a rehash of the original which was unnecessary and I found the author was putting words into Holmes or Watson that Conan Doyle would never have done. Very disappointed as i was really looking forward to this book.
