Summary

It's an unusual case, but Fred Carver, a disabled Florida P.I., takes it anyway: a married woman pays him a $1,000 retainer to follow her and her lover. Minutes later, a speeding truck strikes her down. It looks like suicide, but Carver smells murder. When the woman's husband kills himself and the lover disappears, Carver knows he's right. Soon he's groping in a maze of escort services and blackmail where death may be penance for the guilty. And a dangerous attraction he's drawn into may lead to his own demise.

Critic reviews

"From the unobtrusive gradations in central Florida bars to the skillful modulations of threat and counterthreat in the most commonplace conversations, Lutz shows once again why he's the current dean of American private-eye writers." (Kirkus Reviews) "Lutz's blunt character sketches and gradually connected events are subtly effective. His dogged Carver is a believably heroic guy, tough, scarred, and able to exhibit fear and courage at the same time." (Publishers Weekly)

OK Story poorly narrated

I started reading John Lutz backwards. I began with The Night Spider and THe Night Watcher and enjoyed these books very much. I looked for more titles by this author and stumbled upon Oops and Torch. Defenitely in a different league! Torch is an OK story; John Lutz is a good story teller. but his characters lacked conviction and substance. I don't know if this was due to the flat and boring performance of the narrator though. Overall it was OK and enjoyable

Who picks the narrator?

Perhaps more thought could be given when picking a narrator. Fred Carver is not a high school sophomore with good diction. Please try to find someone more appropriate. A poorly chosen reader can ruin a potentially good listen.
