Summary

Ryô Kihara, trente-deux ans, est condamné à la peine capitale. Il a déjà passé sept ans dans le couloir de la mort sans connaître la date de son exécution, comme le veut la loi japonaise. Jun'ichi Mikami, vingt-sept ans, a été incarcéré deux ans pour homicide involontaire. Remis en liberté conditionnelle, il croise celui qui était son gardien de prison, Shôji Nangô, qui s'occupe aussi de la réinsertion des anciens détenus. Ce dernier lui propose de l'aider à prouver l'innocence d'un certain Ryô Kihara. Voyant un moyen de se racheter aux yeux de la société, Jun'ichi accepte...
