Summary

A schizophrenic man spends his days and nights on a website called Whirl360, believing he's employed by the CIA to store the details of every town and city in the world in his head. Then one day, he sees something that shouldn't be there: a woman being murdered behind a window on a New York street. Suddenly Thomas has more to deal with than just his delusions, as he gets drawn into a deadly conspiracy.

A little disappointing

A little disappointing. I love Linwood Barclay and have listened to and read everything he has written, so he is definitely one of my all time favorite authors. It's not a bad book, but this one falls a little short by his usual very high standards. Usually with a new Linwood Book/Audio, my life gets put on hold until I have got through the whole book, just wanting to know what is going to happen next. I really find myself getting pulled into the middle of the story.

With this one, the plot didn't snowball and gather the usual momentum. I found myself having to keep replaying sections when I picked up listening to remind me of where I was in the story and what was happening. Some of the scenes were too long and drawn out and it took some listening and replaying to get past them and I found the ending a bit of a disappointment.

The concept and idea is very good and there are parts that do really get going, but momentum is lost as that particular plot stops and your attention is turned to something else in the next chapter and everything slows down, and occasionally I got lost...that is a criticism I have of another well known thriller writer, but that isn't something I have attributed to Linwood Barclay before.

The readers were fine, so no problems there and I wouldn't say don't get this book, especially for seasoned Linwood Barclay fans and those who like a good thriller. I don't feel I have wasted my time, it has been entertaining and enjoyable. However the problem for Mr Barclay is that he has set the bar si very high with his previous books and because of that my expectations are high, so I can't help feel disappointed when it doesn't quite hit the mark.

Excellent thriller!

Any additional comments?

This is a cracking thriller. Very well written and not formulaic. Some of the turns are unexpected, some you can see coming, but only because the author takes you there so well. The characters are well drawn and I really loved (and at times worried for) Thomas. A very satisfying read/listen.

Not bad!

I liked the adventure, but I felt the story was of too much danger and insecurity, particularly with someone, who had schizophrenia. But in fairness, it's worth listening to.

Yes! Great listen

I rarely give five start and almost never for this genre. This has everything a book of this sort should have., It actually crosses between political and crime drama, in a intricate and interesting way. Great plot, solid characterisation, with interesting characters, clever plot and an inobtrusive and paced reading. And, not to be forgotten, good writing. Yup, really enjoyed it. The only fault that I can manufacture is that almost to the end it seemed that "the problem" was unresolvable and then . . . . accident/coincidence . . . But, the book had to end sometime.

Something new

I've been working my way through Linwood Barclay's books, and with this being my seventh story from his collection, I'd grown accustomed to common themes that tend to crop up in his books.

Trust Your Eyes was a real breath of fresh air. The main characters are likeable and impossible not to root for, and the switch up in format had me guessing until the end.

I'd just finished listening to The Accident, which unlike the other books, had taken me a while to get into. For the first chapter or so of Trust Your Eyes, I'd worried that might be the case here too, but I couldn't finish this quick enough. I was desperate to know how it was going to play out!

Thank you Linwood for another great story.

Slow burns it's way to a great ending!

I was unsure about this book at the start but ended up loving its gradual ramping up of the suspense and multiple twists and turns to the story. Definitely recommended!

The first of many Linwood Barclay books for me

This is the first Linwood Barclay book I read, but certainly won't be the last! He has a very distinctive style of writing, and this story was predictably unpredictable - lots of twists and turns throughout and hits the wonderful sweet spot between believable by un-guessable, a talent I have previously only really seen in Agatha Christie's books.

Trust Your Eyes

I have enjoyed almost all of Linwood Barclay's thrillers, most of which I have read in print. Having listened on Audible to "Elevator Pitch" I was keen to choose another of his titles. While realising that one of the main characters, suffered from schizophrenia I did question my choice and then listening to the narrator, I nearly returned the title.
As well as being schizophrenic, this character, Thomas, appears to have a degree of autism and the narrator pitched his reading just right.
The thriller is unrealistic, but totally gripping. Barclay " paints" his characters extremely convincingly and the pace is just fast enough to keep his listener enthralled.
The number of unexpected turns within the book creates a tension that makes switching off at the end of a section hard to do and in true Barclay fashion it grips the listener's attention to the last sentence. I am SO glad I did not return this.
An excellent listen.
