Publisher's Summary

Wealthy Alice Whittaker is known for her generosity, and when her friend Nesta vanishes Alice is determined to find her and help her. If that means money, well, Alice has plenty of it. Then the handsome Mr Fielding enters her life, ten years younger than Alice and they marry. But when Alice starts to feel sick -- a virus perhaps, something she just can't shake, her husband seems determined to keep her at home. Is he just being a doting husband who wants his wife to get better? Or is he trying to keep her from finding Nesta? Unwell though she is, Alice can't help asking questions. And the more she learns about Nesta's disappearance, the more certain she becomes that her own life is in peril

Vanity Dies Hard

I'm sure that I've read this book before, but as I barely recalled most of the plot, hearing it once more didn't detract from my enjoyment. It's the story of the recently married Alice, a wealthy woman in her late thirties from a prominent local family whose union with the much-younger Andrew arouses suspicion. Alice's quest to find her glamorous florist friend, Nesta, invokes consternation in the small community.

I often find that early RR novels, despite being an excellent and at times, compelling read, are still finding their feet somewhat. My personal taste is the 'loner/psychopath' stories which soon become the author's trademark.

Eva Haddon's voice performance was excellent and her ability to bring different accents/cadence and nuance to the various characters was outstanding. I will therefore seek out other examples of her work.
