Enjoyable listen

I wasn't as involved somehow in this story but it was enjoyable non the less. Twists and turns more than you initially think it will.

deeply irritating

What would have made What Remains better?

Poor Ben Allen - what a trial to read all this out loud. Once you notice the writing 'tics' (2 word adjective lists; dialogue beginning 'What the hell?....stating the obvious; constant reflection on what a hard time the narrator character is having; stock characters blah blah) you are sunk. This was a moderately good idea in search of an experienced and ruthless editor. It was a great relief when it finally stopped. Sorry.

Has What Remains put you off other books in this genre?

no - other people do it better

Have you listened to any of Ben Allen’s other performances? How does this one compare?

no - he survived this one well

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from What Remains?

Too numerous to mention - all the scenes that add nothing to the plot or characterisation

Any additional comments?

not really - too tired.
