Anita Margolis had vanished. There was no body, no crime, nothing more concrete than an anonymous letter and a name. A pattern soon emerged to the investigation. Not only had Anita been wealthy and flighty, she had been thoroughly immortal, too.

Narration put me off

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who likes crusty posh voices - the kind you used to hear in Carry On movies.

Would you be willing to try another book from Ruth Rendell? Why or why not?

I love reading Ruth Rendell, so I'd try another with a different narrator.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Robin Bailey?

Someone less crusty - realise that Robin Bailey died 20 years ago, and the narration and voices he did felt dated: very actorly, slightly smug and all together irritating.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The audio quality is very good - if you can get past the fact that the narrator grates on your ears.

Any additional comments?

The chapters don't line up with the narration, and the book kept going back to chapter 1 when I restarted it. I lost my place several times.

Good story, irritating narrator

Any additional comments?

Not the best Rendell but pretty good. I found the narrator's voice irritating. It was rasping. As always a good twist at the end.

A Throroughly Enjoyable Mystery!

Other reviewers have summarized the plot - I will just say it is a remarkable feat to create this very complex mystery and carefully reveal the solution in less than 6 hours. Rendell is a master - you will not be disappointed with this one!

boring to listen to

boring story to listen to, couldn't get into the story, as the reading is very monotonous.
