Summary

A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it. Dostoyevsky, in masterly fashion, contrasts the comedy and tragedy of life in St. Petersburg with the anguish and turmoil of Raskolnikov's inner life.

Bravo!

As a novel, it's brilliant, a proper psychological thriller. The characters are around the deepest I've ever come across in a novel and how they react with each other is a total pleasure. The story is in a sense somewhat simple, and yet this is very much to it's advantage given that the focus is on the internal and mental lives of the characters. That's the real story here, it seems to me, and it's executed with incredible skill and reality. You feel as if these characters are real people.

The performance by the reader is first rate, he is clearly very gifted.

Moreover, the length of the book is just right.

Overall, this was the first audio book novel I ever listened to and it's gotten me hooked, especially on the great Russian classics.

The story of a murderer and his punishment

This is a story of a student who wants to conquer the world by force and fails miserably. Although interesting, it is very sad. The student robs and kills a pawnbroker and her sister who had a large sum of money, but eventually he muddles up the situation, and never uses it. He never repents but is eccentric in his behaviour. God helps him by sending him true love, but he is never the same man again. He never reached his full potential because of his pride.

The audiobook quality is very nice and I fully recommend this recording.

Beautifully written, complex and very deep!

This classic is as relevant as ever, in these troubled times! It deeply analyses complexities of human mind on its rational and psychological level. It is a challenging read hence having an audio version makes it very enjoyable and much easier. Loved every minute!
Constantine Gregory was a captivating reader although I imagined Raskolnikoff as a different character. But overall a great experience!👍👍👍

One of my favourite books of all time

The text itself is unparalleled and Dostoevsky is really close to my heart and always will be
The narrator's female voices were a bit forced, but everything else is fine!

The narrator does a brilliant job

Where does Crime and Punishment rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Probably the second best audio book i have ever listened to firstly due to the truly excellent narration and secondly because of the author's unique talent for portraying the different characters including their thoughts and moods. The story is gripping and moves along at a fair clip keeping the listener hooked.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Crime and Punishment?

That would be giving the story away! It is so incredibly well written.

Have you listened to any of Constantine Gregory’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No but I will do.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It didn't make me laugh or cry but I enjoyed it hugely and am very glad I bought it.

Any additional comments?

I cannot praise the narration enough. He alters his pitch and accent to portray the different characters so convincingly that I had to remind myself at times that it was just one person reading. He pronounces all the Russian names so well - at least it seems that way to me but I don't speak Russian!

Fantastic story

I never finished reading this book, so I gave it a try as an audiobook and what a difference it made.
Such a great story, with great characters and moments that were so tense.
The narrator was a bit more cheerful than I imagined Raskolnikov to sound but I adjusted to it after a while and enjoyed it.
