Summary

Ultimate soldier. Ultimate mission. But will the SAS be able to outfox the IRA as they prepare a deadly reprisal?

May 1987: a successful SAS ambush results in the deaths of eight IRA terrorists in Loughgall. Knowing that retaliation is certain and that Gibraltar has been selected by the IRA as a 'soft' target associated with British imperialism, British intelligence goes on the alert.

Then two IRA members arrive in Southern Spain under false names, and an Irishwoman, also using a false identity, visits the changing of the guard ceremony outside the Governor of Gibraltar's residence. Intelligence believes the ceremony is likely to be attacked, and the British government sends in the SAS.

Tasked with preventing the bombing, if necessary by killing the terrorists, the SAS team will need to call into play all their expertise and tenacity in what will become a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Inaccuracies abound.

This book is absolutely full of inaccuracies such as regular British soldiers armed with AR M16’s. These weapons are the use of Special Forces and not risk and file troops.

Geographically inaccurate such as Sean Savage sitting in the slopes of Slieve Donard watching the lapping waters of Strangford Lough. The Lough isn’t visible from the lower slopes of this mountain. In fact, Donald slopes down to the Irish Sea not a Lough.

Riveting listen

A very compelling read. I remember the incident as it was featured in the news at the time.

Decent story horrible narration

The story was ok but drawn out and slow but the narration was so poor. Horrible accents with so many miss pronounced words, places and phrases left it almost unbearable to listen to at times.
Disappointed

Research is the key word

If you’re looking for a factual audiobook then this isn’t it. Totally impossible to know what was said the the Gib 3 in their conversations and what they thought about each other. Names and places pronounced incorrectly and what was going on with the fake Belfast accents ?? Don’t bother trying to talk like that if you don’t know what you’re doing. Sounded atrocious.

Some terminology issues

The thing that bugged was the terminology of "over and out" when using a radio. There's no such thing. It's either " Over or out".
Overall I became more interested about the Loughall chapter. Slightly disappointed

Interesting and informative

Very interesting as I remember this from the news as a child but didn't know the whole story. However it's a pity the narrator didn't bother to learn the pronunciation of the name Mairead. It's pronounced "Mar aid" not mar -ay- add. Also nearly put off st start by the naming of the various guns and equipment that meant absolutely nothing to a lady person.

confused

I am not sure whether this sits it fanciful fiction or factual reconstruction as it fails to meet either. The accents are woeful both Irish and 'others'. The need to punctuate sentences with a ream of numbers and specifications of equipment everytime it is used 'black painted military binoculars' - not technical but repetitive - we get it, black painted binoculars are used on Ops from the first mention. Are serial numbers and specifications of equipment really needed as this isn't a technical military portrayal. Pretty disappointed and would have returned if allowed. Personally I wouldn't bother.
