Summary

In einer eisigen Winternacht irrt der römische Star-Ermittler Vogel mit blutverschmiertem Hemd durch die Wälder am Rand eines Alpendorfs. Er war vor Wochen angereist, um den Fall eines vermissten Mädchens zu klären. Bereits dreißig Jahre zuvor waren hier unter ungeklärten Umständen Kinder verschwunden. Im Dorf glaubt man schnell, dass der Mörder, "Nebelmann" genannt, zurückgekommen ist. Vogel gibt an, einen Unfall gehabt zu haben, doch das Blut an seinem Hemd stammt nicht von ihm. Als ein Psychiater gerufen wird, um ihn zu befragen, beginnt Vogel zu erzählen. Sein Bericht ist ungeheuerlich.
