Summary
Through every family run memories that bind it together - despite everything. The Tulls of Baltimore are no exception. Abandoned by her salesman husband, Pearl is left to bring up her three children alone - Cody, a flawed devil; Ezra, a flawed saint; and Jenny, errant and passionate. Now as Pearl lies dying, stiffly encased in her pride and solitude, the past is unlocked and with it, secrets.
A classic novel from one of America's greatest living novelists, now available as an audiobook.

Tyler's own favourite
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Brilliant novel well read and characterised.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant?
None of the characters were drawn as simplistically black or white, from motivations to action. I listened to the book and went from liking to disliking each person in turns. Ultimately, I finished the book and felt it was well rounded. Tyler's writing was perceptive and powerful.
What about Suzanne Toren’s performance did you like?
Suzanne characterised the children and Pearl so well.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book was very touching and the ending was unexpected but not contrived.
Any additional comments?
Tyler's best novel.

A masterpiece!
The characters of this book seemed alive to me. I am so sad I will not be meeting them again. I can't fault it, the simple but perfectly honed prose, the absolutely perfect characterisation, the development of the family in time and the very gentle dénouement. I loved it!!! ( I had given up on my three previous downloads so I am a harsh critic!) Recommend highly

Anne Tyler at her best
Fabulous characters all flawed but very likeable. These will stay with you as you learn the effect the abandonment by their father has had on them all throughout their lives. Beautifully written as always.

Amazing Anne Tyler!
I’ve read all Anne Tyler’s books & this is one of my Favourites. She is a beautiful writer, As with all her books there seems to be not a lot going on but there is always so much more under the surface.Family,Relationships, love, disappointment, the ordinary in the extraordinary.
Great characters,great narration.

A wonderful book!
I can't believe I have only just discovered this author. I loved every minute of this book, which is all about the characters, their relationships and differing perceptions of the same events. Faultlessly narrated.

Depressing
Beautifully written with well-formed characters and the narrator was good. However, it was incredibly slow and depressing. Had to force myself to finish it.

Wonderfully written
Characters are gradually unpicked, like getting to know a stranger. Wonderfully written.
Narration is awful. We don’t need voices like we are being read a children’s story. Completely spoils a fantastic novel.

Definitely in my top 10!
I can’t get enough of Anne Tyler at the moment. Although long, I never tired of listening to this audiobook each day and it was beautifully narrated. It’s a depiction of lives lived under the influence of narcissistic parenting, but felt like a gentle read at the same time.
