Summary

The beautiful planet Pern seemed a paradise to its new colonists - until unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Suddenly, deadly spores were falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything - and everyone - in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cut off from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, was doomed.

Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. If only, they thought, the dragonets were big enough for a human to ride and intelligent enough to work as a team with a rider.

And so they set their most talented geneticist to work to create the creatures Pern so desperately needed - Dragons!

So disappointing

I really should have read the other reviews before being this. Anne McCaffrey is one of my favourite authors, and I have read all her Pern books many times over the years. I was really looking forward to this one, but wow, what a let-down.

The narrator is truly awful, and can't pronounce so many common words correctly, not to mention her dismal attempt at an Irish accent. I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.

Also this abridged. No, that's not the correct term. This has been butchered by a psychopath. There is no attempt to make a coherent whole out of the story, and instead huge chunks have just been left out, causing a confusing stop-start with new characters and scenes popping up at random.

I really can't find the words to say how bad this is. I wish there was a better version, as this is one of my favourites of the series, but I can't seem to find one.

Take my advice: save your money/credits and listen to something that is not produced and read by the team that created this monster.

Very Dissapointing

Sadly a very poor effort. Strange pauses in sentences, gaps in the story and a very harsh voice narrating what was once a lovely tale of Pern. As a rework, it failed. I shall return this version and hope one day it will be recorded properly.

Abridged, badly.

Abridged by removing random passages, some of which were important. this was not advertised in the blurb. American narrator cannot pronounce European place names.

Awful Butchering of a Great Book

This is NOT a complete and unabridged version of the original book. In fact it is a précis of the original and a bad précis at that. Whole paragraphs and their meaning are missing and overall it is an awful butchering of a brilliant story that comes across as half written and incomplete. The characters become one dimensional and pathetic, and the story fails to excite at all.

When you then add the crass production the rushed and clipped narration and the awful accents I became so annoyed with the performance that I had to stop listening to it.

This ‘production’ of a great story by a great writer is about the worst I have ever come across on audible and it does not deserve to be in the brands stable of excellent work. In contrast the White Dragon book is excellent, well performed and unabridged, so I was devastated to follow up by listening to this drivel. If I was associated with the Anne McCaffery estate I would want this product withdrawn from sale and reproduced in a new unabridged version and read by an empathetic performer with a good range of accents and acting skill.

As it stands I would not recommend this version of the book to anyone at all and I don’t recommend listening to it!!

Great story bad version

The story itself is a good this version however not worth the money. Terrible narration mispronounced names awful fake Irish accent seriously it is that bad it actually detracted from the story. This is a version of this great book I regret wasting a credit on not worth it just read the book yourself you'll likely enjoy the story more absolutely terrible performance by the narrator also far to much has been removed leaving glaring gaps its just not worth the time taken to listen to this version.

Abridged

I took a chance buying direct from audible. No where obvious did it say that the book was abridged and poorly chopped up I might add. For what is usually a beautiful story of Pern, I was heartily disappointed. Shame on you audible, be clear in your marketing

abridged and awful!

I have been an Anne McCaffrey fan for 40 years and never ever thought I'd be writing anything negative about her work - but in this production her work, this wonderful story, has been butchered and it is truly awful. It's not just that the narration is rushed and has no depth, no emotion. The story has been abridged so badly that key events and character development have been missed out completely. It is horrendous!

Rip off. Story is a summary, not the full version.

I wondered why the audio book was just over two hours long as the other books in the series were eight to ten hours. From the first page after simultaneously reading and listening the story skips paragraphs and summaries of speeches occur constantly. I have definitely wasted a credit on this. I do not know how they could get away with this format. Very disappointed.

Good story

It was a good story, but was struggling with keeping the characters separated with so many portrayed a lot alike
