Jim Norton continues his interpretation of James Joyce's classic volume of short stories, originally published in 1914. Norton gives us lively characterizations between narration delivered with a solemn detachment. Musical choices punctuate the narration. Listening brings Joyce’s language fully alive.

Summary

In the second half of Joyce's collection of stories about the citizens of Dublin at the turn of the century, the young author deals with themes of adulthood - of loss, parenthood, politics, religion, and - as in the earlier stories - of disappointment. Rich in humor and musical allusion, they contain (in "A Painful Case", for example, and "The Dead"), some of Joyce's most powerful and moving prose. Holding none of the difficulties of Joyce's most powerful and moving prose. Holding none of the difficulties of Joyce's later novels, such as Ulysses, Dubliners is, in its way, just as radical. These stories introduce us to the city which fed Joyce's entire creative output, and to many of the characters who made it such a well of literary inspiration.

Utterly beautiful but marred by the recording

James Joyce’s exquisite tales perfectly told by Jim Norton. This Naxos recording however is carelessly made. In the first part, there is not even the smallest hiatus between each story, and in the second, there are some quite unaccountable gaps which in some cases are at least 30 seconds long and right in the middle of a story. Such a shame when these could so easily be ironed out by Naxos
