Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Emotional Agility by Susan David, read by Claire Gordon-Webster. Every day we speak around 16,000 words - but inside our minds we create tens of thousands more. Thoughts such as 'I'm not spending enough time with my children' or 'I'm not good enough to present my work' can seem to be unshakable facts.

In reality they're the judgmental opinions of our inner voices. Drawing on more than 20 years of academic research, consulting, and her own experiences overcoming adversity, Susan David, PhD, a psychologist and faculty member at Harvard Medical School, has pioneered a new way to enable us to make peace with our inner selves, achieve our most valued goals, make real change, and live life to the fullest.

Susan David has found that emotionally agile people experience the same stresses and setbacks as anyone else. The difference is the emotionally agile know how to unhook themselves from unhelpful patterns and how to create values-based success with better habits and behaviours.

Emotional Agility describes a new way of living and relating to yourself and the world around you. Become aware of your true nature, learn to face your emotions with acceptance and generosity, act according to your deepest values and flourish.

Susan David has a PhD in psychology and a postdoctorate in emotions research from Yale. She is a psychologist at the Harvard Medical School and a founder and director at the Harvard/McLean-affiliated Institute of Coaching. Susan is the CEO of Evidence Based Psychology, whose worldwide client list includes Ernst and Young Global, the UN Development Program, JP Morgan Chase and GlaxoSmithKline. She has edited a number of books, including the Oxford Handbook of Happiness, and her research has been featured in the Harvard Business Review, Time and The Wall Street Journal. Born in South Africa, Susan now lives in Boston with her family.

Rehash dressed up as something new

The book starts with a claim that emotional agility is a new concept, a step forward from 'emotional intelligence'. For me though it was a ragbag of existing older ideas (CBT, nudge, thinking fast and slow etc) without a coherent underpinning structure. It lacked practical advice and came across as glib at times in a 'just be true to yourself' way. Not a bad primer and pleasant enough to listen to but superficial and nothing new.

A superb listen!

I've really enjoyed Susan David's Emotional Agility audiobook. Susan has managed to integrate academic research, personal stories and practical questions and tools into the book. She's blended these superbly to ensure the book is accessible to readers/listeners from any background. You don't need to have a psychology degree because it's not a heavy going academic book. You simply need to be interested in how emotionally agility can help you navigate life's ups and downs. Not since I read Carol Dweck's 'Mindsets' have I been so captivated by a book. I've re-read several chapters already because I wanted to properly reflect on the content in relation to my own life, and as part of my coaching training. The narration of the audiobook version is particularly good and has made it much easier to recall the key points from the book.

Cleaver analysis and useful advice

If you're the type of person who thinks too much, has unpredictable emotional world or struggles to realise where you're feelings come from, this book could be very useful. It's a board book which was useful to me as I often read too deeply and specifically. It also has useful advice without be preachy or prescriptive.

Eating Disorder Recovery Trigger Warning

This was a good book and definitely worthwhile with regard to emotions content.

However, it read like a Weight Watchers Advert, there were constant references to weight loss and obesity with a nuance of shaming. She uses 2-3 examples with each of her points and with each point at least one of those examples includes references to weight loss, moral or ethical evaluations of food and worthiness as being correlated to thinness.

For a book that is appealing to those trying to accept emotions and focus on flexibility, I find it unacceptable that it includes such a high level of judgement laden statements based on weight.

Good concept

I was curious and perhaps higher expectation of this book. It did not address anything I did not know so was quite disappointed. This is ideal for someone who has no prior understanding of the concept then it would be 5/5.
Narrator was excellent!

Helped me to sort out what's going on in my head.

I've read many self-help / self-improvement books and really enjoy sorting myself out and Emotional Agility was most definitely one of the best books I've read to date which really nailed what's going on in my head and how I can sort it out. Thank you Susan so much.
