Summary

This Original multicast drama piece blends history with fiction to tell the story of Jonah, a young apprentice from London who raises himself from poverty by wit and luck to become one of the most powerful merchants of the age.

A true rags-to-riches tale, Jonah's journey spans the breadth of human experience, from the intricacies of Edward III's political intrigues to the cutthroat world of international trade, from the triumphs of war to the agonies of personal loss - love, friendship, joy, heartbreak and glory. Set largely in London - the Scarlet City - the centre of medieval England, this is a thrilling portrait of the age and the people who made it so rich, colourful and extraordinary.

London 1348: a brutal time of backstabbing and lethal politics, a world that Jonah Durham is now firmly a part of. Jonah's growing family establishes an export monopoly on cloth, and the honour is bestowed on him to run the office of Alderman. Suddenly an unknown disease breaks out: The Plague manifests in every family and every household. A fierce battle against the disease begins and changes the course of Jonah's life forever.

Told in three parts, hear Medieval London come to life in this historical epic, Audible Original's most ambitious production to date. Narrated by Miriam Margolyes, OBE (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Romeo + Juliet, Mulan) and starring Douglas Booth (Riot Club, Loving Vincent, Shelley) as Jonah and Samuel West (BAFTA nominated; Mr Selfridge, Howards End) as Willcox.

Also featuring: Daniel Anthony, Josephine Arden, Gareth Armstrong, Clare Buckfield, Elliot Chapman, Trevor Cooper, Oliver Coopersmith, Clare Corbett, Raymond Coulthard, Gareth David-Lloyd, Barnaby Edwards, Andrew French, Raj Ghatak, Gerran Howell, James Joyce, Joe Jameson, Mack Keith-Roach, Barry McCarthy, Olly McCauley, George Naylor, Matty Norgren, Steven Pacey, Nicholas Pegg, Siobhán Redmond, Ryan Sampson, David Schofield, Rose Shalloo, Tony Millan, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Lizzie Waterworth-Santo, Samuel West, Finty Williams, Alexander Vlahos.

Smooth As Silk

This series has been a complete joy from start to finish in terms of the quality of the production. This sadly shorter final episode matches the production values lots of us recognised in the preceding two. Audible has got it absolutely spot on with these, everything is just right from the music to the rather stellar cast that they have splashed out on.

However, Jonah faces some tough subjects in this one, as well as the usual treachery we've become used to the plague visits London with tragic consequences and the world around Jonah becomes an ever tougher place to live in.

With excellent performances and a fine soundscape backing the cast these are audio productions as good as you'll get anywhere.

absolutely fantastic series

Audible really outdid themselves with this 3 part series. I can't recommend this enough. Obviously you'll need to listen to these in order, but each has so much to offer.
The story throughout was fantastic, the narrator - fantastic. The cast are equally superb.
To be honest, I'm a little sad I've finished this!

Not the best for me...

I can see by the other reviews that I'm in a minority here, but I didn't think this trilogy was absolutely brilliant. It was OK, probably more than OK to be fair - Miriam Margolyes was certainly excellent - but I found a number of the other performances a bit irritating.
Having said that, I enjoyed it enough to purchase all three instalments, but I found bits of the story predictable, bits woefully far-fetched, and possibly because of the strength of the reviews I'd read, personally I was a bit disappointed.

Empire: Scarlet City - Part 111

Wonderful!
Only complaint that it felt far too rushed to get to a satisfactory conclusion.
I listened to this production in one sitting, could have done with at least three hours more.
Hope the author writes more of this interesting saga, and we are lucky enough to get the same cast and production values.
Bravo!

Miriam and the Plantagenets

Miriam triumphs again with a script that is over flowery and too wordy. The story is about the early Plantagenets which is a period of history that is often missed. The story is entertaining otherwise I would not be on the third part. It is not high literature but kept me amused whilst toiling in the garden.
