Summary

One frozen January morning at 5am, Inspector Wallander responds to what he believes is a routine call out. When he reaches the isolated farmhouse he discovers a bloodbath. An old man has been tortured and beaten to death; his wife lies barely alive beside his shattered body, both victims of violence beyond reason. Wallander's life is a shambles. His wife has left him, his daughter refuses to speak to him, and even his ageing father barely tolerates him. He works tirelessly, eats badly, and drinks his nights away in a lonely, neglected flat. But now Wallander must forget his troubles and throw himself into a battle against time.

classic Wallander

even having seen an adaptation of this didn't detract from the Story. Maybe because the authors words were far more captivating or maybe because Wallander himself was portrayed in a much better way but essentially the tclues and twists keep you hooked from beginning to end. Thoroughly enjoyed this audio book.

Loved this

Brilliant detective story, beautifully written, fantastic characters and perfect balance between the plot and Wallander's own life - will certainly listen to all of the series.

It seemed a very long book

This seemed an exceptionally long book. I am judging it purely on audible. Personally, I did not find it an easy listen. The author writes in staccato style. Sentences are lists of small details. Swedish names of the detectives are confusing and sound the same. The biggest problem is there is no tension in this book, no build up, no thrill. Just a depressed, flawed detective heading an endless red- herring . It maybe lovers of Mankell’s books read him for his spare prose and likeable hero, but by the time I got to the end I was as exhausted and depressed as the detective...

Clearly the first

Not as polished as his later Wallander books - but we get a glimpse of the introspection and atmosphere.

Bleak but kept me interested

I enjoyed this, had to concentrate a fair bit in places to keep understanding but it was worth it. good narration and character development.

A bit longwinded

I’d read Italian shoe by Henning Mankell and had really enjoyed it. This was the second book by him I’d read and I wasn’t that taken with it. It was very drawn out and not a particularly gripping story with a few loose ends not tied up. Disappointing

Sean Barrett

another great Mankel story brought brilliantly alive by the wonderful Sean Barrett I'm sure he could read aloud the dictionary and it would sound wonderful

Well narrated but slow pace

Meandering storyline and a somewhat hapless detective but curiously satisfying.
Dear audible why is there a minimum word count in reviews??
