Summary

"No matter how devoted, dedicated, conscientious and altogether noble a teacher is, I feel pretty sure that each and everyone feels the same sense of freedom and relief from her chains when the end of term arrives...."

So it is for Miss Read - but on the very first day of the long summer holiday, she falls and breaks her arm. Instantly, all her plans for the holidays are in tatters. But Miss Read's friend, Amy, comes up with a plan: and so it is that the two of them leave Fairacre for the island of Crete.

The change of scene provides a welcome break for both women, giving Miss Read the opportunity to recuperate, and for them both to discuss the merits of single and married life. And when Miss Read returns, refreshed, to Fairacre, she is ready to tackle the problems which await her.

Another lovely listen, with one snag

I’m working my way through all the Fairacre books, they’re so cosy and lovely. An easy listen.

The only snag with this one was the thread running through it of a serial cheating husband that the wife desperately wants to stay with, which annoyed me greatly and was very sad. However, I just had to remember it was written in the 1960s and women had less options then. Although I know some women behave the same now.

Very Enjoyable

Carole Boyd is a wonderful narrator and she enhanced the book considerably as she brought all the characters to life. The story is good and the only reason I only gave it 4 stars is that some of the other Miss Reed books are even better. This book was the perfect antidote to a very stressful week, it's lovely gentle story was just what I needed.
