Abducted by alien slavers and taken to a lawless desert world, the last thing starship pilot Mia expects is to find herself in the protective, brawny arms of a wild, blue-skinned alien.
Rescued by gladiators on the alien world of Carthago, Mia is working to find other abducted humans who are still lost. But someone else also needs her help - the untamed alien who's saved her twice. Rescued from vicious fight rings he's fought in since he was a child, Vek is prone to losing control in aggressive fits of rage...and Mia discovers that she is the only who can calm him. As she finds herself drawn to the man beneath the beast, she knows that with his enhanced senses, Vek can help her find her friends.
For years, all Vek'ker has known is death, darkness, and killing. Despite his newfound freedom, he is struggling to control his rages and withdrawal from the drugs his captors used on him. Only one scent soothes him, one voice calms him, and one woman is his light in the dark. Vek will do anything to protect Mia and make her happy...including vowing to find her friends.
With the gladiators from the House of Galen, Vek, and Mia follow mysterious clues into a dangerous part of the desert on the trail of the missing humans. They are drawn closer together but as they enter the deadly Illusion Mountains, they have no idea of the dangers lying in wait for them, or how far they will both be pushed to their limits in order to survive.

Mia and Vek. One a little over five feet and human, one quite large, blue, and distinctly not human. An unlikely pairing, but one that tugs on heartstrings and makes anyone yearn for a relationship like this one.

Btw- if you haven't read the other gladiator books, stop right here and do that first. While these are standalone stories, Anna Hackett has interwoven the characters' lives so well that I'll inevitably give something away from a previous book.

Mia is back at the House of Galen, after being rescued from Catalyst. Vek in back in his cell, after being a huge part of Mia's rescue, because he's still fighting the effects of being drugged and forced to fight to the death for so long that he is still a danger to himself and all those around him...except Mia. Somehow, Mia is able to calm him down when he's in a frenzy. Even a later frenzy that'll leave you fanning yourself. You'll know what I mean when you read it. Mmm.

This book is all about their story adied to the group's continued rescue mission of Dayna, Ryan, any and all other humans abducted. The search leads them this time to the Illusion Mountains and the Nerium, a never-before-heard-of species who might hold the key to more than one mystery. If they can survive the journey there and back.

Anna Hackett is an author who always delivers a well developed story that will keep you engaged from beginning to end, as well as making it so good you want it to be real so the story can just keep going.

Great story

A very fast read. Like all of Ms. Hackett's series, each one embellishes and expands on the world she's creating. In Beast, we have a hero who had been in the underground fight rings so long he knows nothing of how to deal with feelings and relationships and a heroine who knows what she wants and goes for it. Great world building and wonderful writing, this series is one of my favorite reads and Beast is climbing the charts of my favorite reads.
