Summary
Joe Arden and Narrator Hall of Fame inductee Andi Arndt deliver a perfectly layered performance in Cake, a romance about finding love and redemption in unexpected places.
Quiet and aloof rock star Jake McKallister and outspoken, vivacious college student Casey Caldwell are polar opposites: Casey is bubbly and talkative; Jake is reclusive. Casey enjoyed a picturesque childhood; Jake’s childhood could only be described as a well-publicized nightmare. Jake’s life revolves around music, and Casey can’t carry a tune.
Music saved Jake, yet he lacks the outgoing personality expected of a famous performer. After surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen, he becomes a guarded workaholic who desperately attempts to forget the past. Career success comes easily for Jake, but he struggles to make personal connections.
Despite their differences, Casey’s light harmonizes with Jake’s darkness, a balance embodied in the unexpectedly warm and humorous dual performance. Can the sweetness of true love overcome Jake’s tragic past?
This is the first book in the Cake series, a collection of contemporary romance novels focusing on the lives of a famous family.

What a surprise!
I expected the usual chicklit offering but this book had a lot more depth with lots of drama. I would prefer not to have the explicit sex description and not so much swearing but I'm probably in the minority there. I even had tears in my eyes at times and I'm usually not touched by emotion when reading fiction. An excellent book. Thanks very much.

Love this book 😀
What made the experience of listening to Cake the most enjoyable?
Love the interaction of the two main characters, it was well written, and really well read.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
One of the first in the book. The wedding, it was really funny. But the rest of the book was great as well.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could have I would have.

Have your cake and enjoy it!
Would you consider the audio edition of Cake to be better than the print version?
I liked the fact that this was a romance with a twist. The story moved at a nice pace, the narration was excellent and the characters were likable. Although there were dark parts in the book relating to Jake's past they were well woven into the overall story and added an edge to it rather than distracting the reader.

Disappointing 😞
I really loved the story to begin with and their love for each other is swoonworthy with little to no angst. What makes it especially nice is that Casey, the heroine, is quite the nerdy accountant and a great foil for Jake, the rockstar; and puts him in his place when they first meet.
What didn't make sense was the mother from hell, on first meeting, who then turns out to be the angel of mercy.
Furthermore, when you start exploring the horror of Jakes background, you never do find out why he was kidnapped and what happened to Kyle, his brother. This might come out in the rest of the series, but it felt incomplete to me.
I would have preferred to hear a more rounded account of the kidnapping, rather than the simple gruesome escape, and how he manages to survive, e.g. his after care and how he and the family were affected up until the present.
Also, once he had explained his escape to Casey it was if all was over, whereas with all trauma, although talking about it helps, it is never over, whereas in this story all was right with the world.
Then there was the surgery when we had to have just a little more unnecessary drama. Oh yawwwwn!
So I was left feeling disappointed. Such a shame!

More Cake Please!
This story was beautifully written and brilliantly narrated. I read a lot and this is the first story in a very long time where I've laughed, lived and shed tears. I was a part of Casey and Jake's love story and I think that's a sign of a gifted writer, and a very well written book, if the story 'comes to life' for the reader.
I would definitely recommend both J. Bengtsson and Cake
I loved it!

laughing from the first chapter
I love the entire Cake series, the writing is fun and the characters likeable throughout. the subject matter in each book is deep and covers all kinds of trauma and personal struggles, all the while, growing the relationships and great storylines.
I'd say my only gripe in the Audible version is Joe Arden as Jake. and don't get me wrong Joe is a master of the smouldering voice, but he sounds too old to be Jake in my opinion. Otherwise a brilliant book through and through.
