Publisher's Summary

A chance meeting in Rio takes Maria to Geneva, where she dreams of finding fame and fortune, yet ends up working the streets as a prostitute. In Geneva, Maria drifts further and further away from love while at the same time developing a fascination with sex. Eventually, Maria's despairing view of love is put to the test when she meets a handsome young painter. In this odyssey of self-discovery, Maria has to choose between pursuing a path of darkness, 'sexual pleasure for its own sake', or risking everything to find her own 'inner light' and the possibility of sacred sex, sex in the context of love. A daring modern fable about the nature of love and sex.

Good book. Bad choice on the reader.

I like Paulo Coelho a lot, but didn't like the reader of this book. Very think and pompous accent. He gave a sense of distance from the character. Perhaps if it would have been a woman... The story is very interesting from the main characters point of view about sex, sexuality and prostitution.

Interesting but unrealistic love story

I can see why the story is compared to a fairy tale. I prefer Veronica decides to die. The dark side the human experience isn't explored in this story leaving it a little unsatisfying. As always Coelho asks some thought provoking questions. This is a good read but not, in my opinion, his best work.
