Summary

Winner of the British Book Awards, Author of the Year, 2004.
Winner of the CWA Dagger in the Library Award, 2004.

Alexander McCall Smith returns once again to his favourite fictitious house, set in a real street in Edinburgh.

First published in 110 episodes in The Scotsman newspaper, this is vintage McCall Smith, tackling issues of trust and honesty, snobbery and hypocrisy, love and loss, but all with great lightness of touch.

Critic reviews

"A treasure of a writer whose books deserve immediate devouring." (Marcel Berlins, Guardian)
"It is hard to think of a contemporary writer more genuinely engaging...[his] novels are also extremely funny: I find it impossible to think about them without smiling." (Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday)

Very entertaining

Narration was excellent. Loved it that all the characters literally had their own voice .
