Summary

He is Dexter Mayhew, tall, dark, and (she can't deny it) handsome. She is Emma Morley, bottled red hair, wilfully badly dressed, all principles and no action. Could this be the dawn of the rest of their lives? Or are Dex and Em living proof that - despite an unlikely beginning - men and women really can be just good friends?

emotional roller-coaster of a book

I just finished this emotional roller-coaster of a book. The idea of revisiting the lives of the main characters on the same day every year for almost 20 years was so well done, all the important gaps filled so well that you feel you knew all there was to know about them... this was a very difficult book to put down and I became very emotionally and intellectually invested. It made me question my life choices, and I cried with Dex and Em when they were sad, I yearned when they were yearning.
The narrator is very good, although I liked her Em voice much more than her Dex voice (although this may also be because Dex is not as immediately likable as Em).

One Day

I have just finished this book and I am quite disappointed. Firstly I'm afraid I really never got used to the narrator, it took me months to struggle through this book and every time I listened all I could focus on was the narrator rather than the words she was saying. I feel I therefore missed a lot of what was going on through the book. I agree with other reviewers also as I didn't really like either of the characters, Dex needed a slap most of the time and Emma just needed to stop feeling sorry for herself. That said however now that I have finished it I am thinking about the story and am quite moved by how it all turned out. I feel I may take a second look but this time unfortunately I'll have to read rather than listen and hope that there may be some endearing moments that I missed while over analysing the narrators every utterance!

Another Brilliant Novel from David Nicholls

Somehow I missed this the first time around but having just listened to "Sweet Sorrow" I wanted to listen to another David Nicholls book.

Another tour de force, incredibly well observed characters & the recurring themes (sometimes fairly obvious, sometimes less so) are outstanding.

Read it.

Very well crafted

The idea of revising a set of characters the same day every year and seeing how their lives, feelings, thoughts and situations change over the course of 20 years makes this book, at least, worth reading. When you add to that the craft with which the writer weaves the stories of the two main characters - who, at times, are not particularly likable and, at other times, are very close to our hearts -, it is very easy to recommend this book to anyone looking for a great story.
The narrator is also extremely talented and this book should appeal, particularly, to those who share generation with the main characters, going to university in the 80s, discovering internet and mobile phones during their adult lives, etc.

Well worth the read

Exellent. Beautifully read, how she does all those voices in such quick succession is amazing to me. Now here's a woman who can do a sexy man's voice! The story is touching, compelling. Maybe a little long winded, maybe it should stop before it does. But altogether a very pleasant time spent listening.

M and Dex,

Very moving book, written as a life unfolds but goes back and forth to expand on relevant phases. I cried like an idiot, not sure why as it is just ficton, but enjoyed this book immensely and will go to see film version (with box of tissues)

missing it

I listened to this about 3 months ago now and I still yearn for and miss M and Dexter. I keep going back to it just to hear the narrator again. This is a must
