Thought provoking and beautiful music too.

This book raises contentious issues whichever side of the so called 'divide' you are on whilst exposing much of the hypocrisy from the religious right who try and claim that every word in the bible is the word of god yet pick and choose when it suits them. Jodi Picoult has a knack for tackling difficult issues whilst showing, at the end of the day, love and mutual respect are all that matters even if there a still sections of the community who have to pay a very heavy price for that love.

The narration is shared between three characters and is unusual in having a musical element too, which I have to say works very well with this book. It is a great book and well narrated and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Don't be put off by the music!

I loved this book. The love story at it's heart was subtle, convincing & well drawn and I found the central characters resonated with me. As you expect with this author, the moral maze is thought provoking and not as clear cut as you might think. The main reason I have been provoked into writing a review is the overwhelming number of negative reviews about the music scattered throughout the book. These reviews put me off for some time before I finally purchased it. Personally, I enjoyed most of the musical interludes but I think it is important to point out that they are few and far between and easily skipped if they are not your bag. In short, if the only thing putting you off is the music then get over it and give it a shot!
